Message is applied to the load. Many circuits in autos and other machines have the hot side applied to a device and then that device is grounded to turn it on. For many transistor circuits it is best to put power on the device, connect that device to an open collector on a transistor, and then ground the emitter of the transistor (power applied to the base of the transistor then turns on the device).
